Mastering Dates in SQL

Salon E
Tuesday Nov 12, 2024 @  01:15:PM  —  01:55:PM CST

One of the most common sources of frustration when embarking down the SQL path in PowerSchool is trying to figure out why your date-based queries don’t work like you think they should. Or why they work great in SQL Developer but not at all in your customizations.

In this session, we will cover the basics of date handling in SQL databases in general, and Oracle in particular. Then we’ll go over the most common stumbling blocks to successfully using date values in SQL queries. You’ll finally understand why adding a TO_DATE() or TRUNC() somewhere in your query seems to magically fix everything, and why a “date” doesn’t actually exist in Oracle. We’ll also touch on a few advanced techniques for reporting that leverage the power hidden beneath the complexity.

This intermediate-level session assumes a working knowledge of SQL fundamentals, including how to use JOINs. Attendees should either have prior experience with SQL or have attended one of the introductory SQL sessions.

Securing Customizations

Salon E
Tuesday Nov 12, 2024 @  02:05:PM  —  02:45:PM CST

PowerSchool provides a number of powerful tools for extending and customizing built-in functionality, as well as building your own custom features from scratch. But, as the classic saying goes, with great power comes great responsibility. Customizations can introduce serious security vulnerabilities which can allow malicious users to bypass permissions or grant them unfettered access to the database.

We will review PowerSchool’s core security model and where each piece is enforced, go over the various bad actors who may try to exploit vulnerabilities in your custom code, and explore the “Principle of Least Privilege” which is the foundation of a good security posture. Then we will dig into the attack vectors affecting customizations and how to protect against them, including: permissions enforcement, untrusted user input (“GPV”), SQL code injection, JavaScript code injection, PSHTML attacks, and more.

This intermediate- to advanced-level session assumes a working knowledge of PowerSchool customizations. Attendees should either have prior practical experience building customizations or have attended one of the introductory customizations sessions.

Thinking in SQL - Part 1: The Fundamentals

Salon G
Wednesday Nov 13, 2024 @  08:15:AM  —  09:45:AM CST

SQL is the language used to speak to databases, providing access to the mountains of valuable data stored within PowerSchool. It is simple enough to speak in SQL by copying and pasting other people’s examples and code snippets, but to get answers to data questions that are uniquely yours, you need to be able to think in SQL.

This session covers everything you need to know in order to build your own meaningful SQL queries and — more importantly — understand what’s happening behind the scenes. We will cover the anatomy of an SQL statement and simple SELECTs all the way through complex JOINs. You’ll understand why there are inner joins and outer joins, when to use them, and how they actually work. You’ll be able to explain why, no matter how complex the query, you’re only ever really dealing with a single table at a time. And we’ll cover some of the most common pitfalls, why they are evil, and how to avoid them.

This introductory session assumes no prior knowledge of SQL, so is targeted at beginners, but is also a good fundamentals review for intermediate and advanced users. We’ll build on the fundamentals learned here in the next session, “Part 2: The Tricky Bits”.

Add substantial capability for tracking and assessing student fees within PowerSchool. Key features include student receipts, statements, automatic discounting for Free/Reduced lunch status, enhanced pro-rating of School and Course fees, and “no more SOY balances”! Details will appear for any previous year's unpaid fees and each student’s Fees will “travel” with students as they move between schools within a district. MBA Café allows food service personnel to easily generate point-of-sale transactions for meals and a la carte items. Quickly serve students, staff, and guests (individual and groups) from multiple menus such as breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner. Both Fees and Café offer a wide variety of reports for auditing purposes, and they integrate well with several online payment provider partners.
