Crosshatch Field Schools are hands-on, full-day, on-farm conferences. In addition to workshops with brilliant teachers, the Field Schools will include one-on-one consulting with farm experts, a local food lunch and a post-workshop social networking hour.

Mushroom Production with Bernie Ware

• MORNING: Each attendee will learn how to inoculate shiitake mushroom logs by working at drilling, filling, and waxing stations throughout the day. Each participant will take home a share of fully inoculated logs.
• AFTERNOON: Hands-on mushroom knowledge continues as attendees make oyster mushroom totems, learn about winecap mushroom propagation, and are shown how to use old logs and totems in edible landscape design by constructing hugelkultures.

Beekeeping with Charlotte Hubbard

THIS SESSION WILL TAKE PLACE AT GROW BENZIE (5885 Frankfort Hwy, Benzonia, MI 49616)

• ?MORNING: The morning begins with a full discussion on spring colony management. Hands-on hive inspections will take place in the bee yard including winter survival evaluation and varroa assessment and strategies. If the hives call for it, hands-on splits of the hive will take place.
• AFTERNOON: The morning’s work with hive inspections will continue. We will also discuss summer colony management including options for June swarming.

Fruit Tree Management with Trevor Newman

• MORNING: Orchard design, planning and fruit tree varieties will be covered in the morning hours.
• AFTERNOON: During the afternoon, Trevor will discuss orchard management techniques including hands-on grafting and tree planting with companion plants in a prepared hugelkulture bed.
