Participants must attend every session in order to earn their 10-Hour card. Hydrogen Sulfide Certification is designed as a safety awareness program to familiarize students with the dangers associated with working in an H2S environment. The class is appropriate for entry-level through supervisory level employees. This class meets the ANSI/ASSE Z390.1-Accepted Practices for Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) Training Programs standard.

KAITLYN MCGRATH, MONTANA SAFETY AND HEALTH CONSULTATION PROGRAM

Millions of U.S. workers are exposed to heat in their workplaces. Although illness from exposure to heat is preventable, every year, thousands become sick from occupational heat exposure, and some cases are fatal.  This course covers the signs of heat illness and methods to control risk.

TIFFANY OTT, MONTANA SAFETY AND HEALTH CONSULTATION PROGRAM

Fentanyl and methamphetamine abuse profoundly impacts communities throughout the state. Methamphetamine is the most abused illicit drug in Montana and over the last decade illicit fentanyl use has increased at an alarming rate. This presentation will provide an overview of the history, current trends, social implications, and potential risks associated with a variety of occupations. The Bureau of Labor Statics has reported a significant increase in overdose deaths from nonmedical use in the workplace and NIOSH has developed guidance for workplace naloxone programs. Individuals that would benefit from this training include, employers and employees in all sectors of industry, individuals who work in emergency services, public health, property management, real estate, and the general public.

KARL ROSSTON, MONTANA DEPARTMENT OF HEATH AND HUMAN SERVICES

This presentation focuses on suicide within our culture with specific attention towards Montana. The presentation covers national and Montana data, demographics of a suicidal person, warning signs, risk assessment, training on how to intervene with a suicidal person, and crisis resources available. The presentation will also cover a simple suicide risk assessment that any employer can use called the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale, or C-SSRS. The C-SSRS is a suicidal ideation and behavior rating scale to evaluate suicide risk. It rates an individual's degree of suicidal ideation on a scale, ranging from "wish to be dead" to "active suicidal ideation with specific plan and intent and behaviors

Learning objectives for this presentation include: 1) Participants will be able to identify at least three warning signs of suicide, 2) Participants will know what C-SSRS stands for, and 3) Participants will be able to identify at least two suicide prevention resources in the state.

NICK POOLE, WORKERS COMPENSATION SECTION

This class provides an overview of Montana’s workers’ compensation system, including the history and purpose of workers’ compensation, coverage requirements, rights and responsibilities of the employer and injured worker, benefits structure, and dispute resolution process.

JASON SWANT, WORKERS COMPENSATION SECTION

A primary objective of the workers’ compensation system is to restore the injured worker to productive employment as soon as possible after an injury. An effective return-to-work program is a key component for a business looking to contain costs associated with workers’ compensation claims. Surprisingly, a large percentage of employers do not implement return-to-work programs within their workplace. This course will explore the factors influencing return to work, and the challenges employers may face with creating effective return-to work programs.

ETHAN ANDERSON, MONTANA SAFETY AND HEALTH CONSULTATION PROGRAM

This class will look at safety and health hazards that are commonly found in Grain Handling. We will be discussing the six most common hazards found in Grain Handling/Storage, abatement options for mitigating safety and health hazards, OSHA’s Grain Handling standard 1910.272 and looking at tools and resources for employers to use when identify and mitigating safety and health hazards.

Participants who take the OSHA 10-Hour Construction course must have their cameras on during the class. Participants must attend every session in order to earn their 10-Hour card. This training is designed to educate every construction worker on the recognition and avoidance of the top four hazards in your work environment. Topics include fall protection, personal protective equipment, health hazards, and more. It also includes an introduction to OSHA’s construction industry standards and requirements of the more frequently referenced and cited standards. Students receive an OSHA 10- hour card upon completion.

This class meets OSHA requirements for 8 hours of annual refresher training and targets workers who remove hazardous waste or who are exposed to hazardous substances or health hazards. Topics include HAZWOPER regulations, safety hazards, air monitoring, medical surveillance, site control, decontamination, and respiratory equipment. **This is for those who have completed the 40-hour or 24-hour HAZWOPER training.**

RYAN GENTRY, MONTANA PUBLIC SECTOR SAFETY COMPLIANCE

The instructor will review your 5000-23 at the beginning of class. You must provide a previous 5000-23 for a completed (8 hours) Annual Refresher Class or your completed (24 Hours) New Miner 5000-23.

Slips, trips, and falls are one of the leading causes of accidents, both in and out of the workplace. As a result, they are a significant problem both to the public and the workplace. This class will cover practical methods to reduce slips and falls.

MATHEW SCHONSBERG, MONTANA SAFETY AND HEALTH CONSULTATION PROGRAM

This presentation will provide basic level awareness training regarding electrical hazards in the workplace. Course objectives include defining and understand what electricity is and the hazards associated with it. Describe hazard protection measures as well as identifying electrical hazards in the workplace.

RYAN ASHBY, MONTANA PUBLIC SECTOR SAFETY COMPLIANCE

This training course will review the requirements of the Lockout/Tagout regulation under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147. This program will also cover the various types of active and stored energy sources and the controls necessary for employee protection. The various categories of tasks and activities requiring energy isolation will be reviewed including typical lockout procedures, equipment and devices used as well as an understanding of employee lockout and verification responsibilities.

This course will provide an overview of the Hazard Communication Standard. We will cover the methods for learning about chemical hazards, including labels, safety data sheets and hazard assessments, as well as standard requirements in the workplace.

Navigating the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and various other laws, regulations, policies, and procedures can seem complex and confusing. This presentation will examine key concepts of the FMLA, common challenges, and employer best practices. Attending both the FMLA and ADA presentations will offer participants a greater understanding of where the FMLA leave begins and ends, how FMLA and ADA differ, how they often overlap, and how to administer each piece of legislation to remain compliant and balance the needs of both the employee and employer.

The purpose of the Montana Prevailing Wage law is to create a level playing field for those competing for public contracts and to protect the general welfare of Montana workers on public works projects. This class provides an overview of what is required by law, possible repercussions of violating Prevailing Wage law, the different components in rates schedules, and what they mean for you.

The intent of the Montana Child Labor Standards Act is to protect young workers from employment possibly interfering with their educational opportunities or be detrimental to their health or well-being. This class will discuss the different age restrictions for youth employment and the hazardous occupations as defined by the USDOL. 

CO OSHA TRAINING INSTITUTE EDUCATION CENTER

This class will offer an overview of the OSHA trenching and excavation standards, industry best practices, and resources for additional trenching and excavation safety assistance. The training will provide information to employers and employees who need to know the following: trenching and excavation problems, OSHA’s basic message on trenching and excavation safety, utility protection, hazards, soil testing and classification, protective systems, and managing trenches and excavations.

This course covers an introduction to basic incident investigation procedures and describes analysis techniques.

Course topics include reasons for conducting incident investigations, employer responsibilities related to workplace incident investigations, and a four step incident investigation procedure.

The target audience is the employer, manager, employee or employee representative who is involved in conducting incident and/or near-miss investigations.

Upon course completion students will have the basic skills necessary to conduct an effective incident investigation at the workplace.
