Are you thinking about joining a nonprofit board? Are you already serving on a board but not quite sure what is expected of you? this workshop will help you feel more confident in this important role. Nonprofits are businesses and depend on their board members to set the strategic direction and secure the human and financial resources needed to deliver their mission. 

Here are some of the questions that we will address:

• What is the difference between a for-profit and a nonprofit?
• What are my legal obligations as a board member?
• What kind of fiscal oversight will I be expected to provide?
• How are nonprofit financials different from corporate financials?
• Who is responsible for nonprofit fundraising?
• What kind of planning is the board responsible for?
• How do I choose a board that is a good fit for me?
• What kind of questions should I ask before I accept an invitation?
• How do I find board opportunities?

There will be plenty of time to ask your own questions, so come prepared to get the answers you need to step into board leadership. 

Full participation in Basics of Board Leadership is applicable for 1.5 points in Category 1.B -Education of the CFRE International application for initial certification and/or recertification.

MEET THE PRESENTER

Ronnie Hagerty, Ph.D., CFRE, CNP oversees the United Way of Greater Houston’s Nonprofit Connection, a professional and leadership development practice serving area nonprofit organizations, and United Way Project Blueprint, a program that prepares members of Houston’s multicultural communities for nonprofit board leadership. She has extensive experience working with boards of all sizes and states of development. Hagerty earned her bachelor's degree from Saint Mary's College/Notre Dame, master's degree in business administration from the University of Houston, and doctoral degree in leadership and change from Antioch University. She is a lecturer at the Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University. She serves on the boards of The Rose and the Association of Fundraising Professionals, and has been appointed by the Governor of Texas to serve as board chair for the OneStar Foundation National Service Commission.
