Applying a Public Health Approach to Problem Gambling Prevention

Wednesday, September 25th, from 2:00 PM ET to 4:00 PM ET (Virtual)

With expanded access to gambling, many communities are not aware of the potential harms associated with problem gambling, the populations that are disproportionally affected, and the importance of using a public health approach that is grounded in equity to address problem gambling. This introductory training will explore the importance of protecting and improving the health of people and their communities, problem gambling concepts and terminology, variables associated with an increased risk or a lower likelihood of problem gambling, groups at risk for developing problem gambling, and connections with related health issues.

At the end of this training participants will be able to:

  • Better understand how to apply a public health approach to problem gambling
  • Describe levels of gambling and their associated risk
  • Identify problem gambling risk and protective factors
  • Identify groups at disproportionate risk for developing problem gambling
  • Better understand the intersections between problem gambling and other behavioral health issues

CEUs

Upon completion of the training and receipt of your evaluation survey, participants of A Public Health Approach to Problem Gambling Training will be emailed a certificate of completion.

The Massachusetts Center of Excellence on Problem Gambling Prevention (MCOEPGP) provides capacity building, training and resource development services to address the prevention of problem gambling and related health issues such as the prevention of substance misuse, suicide and violence. The MCOE PGP approach is rooted in public health and utilizes the social-ecological model – incorporating the individual, family, and community – as a framework for its work. This approach is in alignment with evidence-based practices that require authentic community engagement, the use of an explicit equity lens and addressing the economic and social conditions that influence the health of people and communities, known as the social determinants of health.
