The opioid crisis has touched every corner of our state, and our fragile EMS system has been affected as well. The increasing demands which opioids place on our EMS clinicians, also require that we explore beyond the basics of how we have approached opioid use and response in the past. Brian will bring to light not only the emergent treatment of opioid overdose, but also treatments available for our patients with persistent opioid dependance which Alaska EMS has traditionally not been exposed to. 

Signs and ways of coping with burnout for EMS workers.

This session is a chance for AK EMS Instructors to meet with Carin Marter from the State of Alaska EMS Office to ask questions about course management in the State System and get answers to their course management questions. All ETT and EMS Instructors are welcome to attend!

The EMS professional is confronted with a huge amount of material to learn and master--often in a short time. Learning styles and other myths will be debunked as we review best practices for how the brain processes new information. This presentation is for anyone who is learning new knowledge and skills, as well as anyone who trains, teaches or instructs new recruits. Students will learn how to optimize their study time, learn to recall new facts and how best to practice new skills. Teachers will learn that these research-based best practices can be the key to maximize learning. 

During this meeting we will be electing members of our Board of Directors. Each agency in our region has a vote, one delegate per agency. There will be amazing door prizes for attendance. When a patient presents with either high or low blood sugar, it can be a complication of diabetes - but not always. How can we know for sure? Let's look into the actual disease of diabetes. We will review the relationship between glucose and insulin, what happens to the body systems as a result, and where the highs and lows of that balance leave our patients. Diabetes is the 9^th leading cause of death across the country, and that includes Alaska. As servants to our community, we can do so much more than just offering a ride to the hospital. By enhancing our understanding of this complex chronic illness, we can more effectively intervene when they are in crisis and improve our overall care.

 Learning Objectives:

• Understand the physiological relationship between glucose and insulin in the body, including the role of insulin in facilitating glucose uptake by cells and regulating blood sugar levels.
• Describe the difference between types of diabetes  
• Recognize the signs and symptoms of hypo/hyperglycemia, understand the impact on the body, and be prepared to intervene.

This presentation will cover some of the major issues related EMS law in Alaska. Major topics will include negligence, immunity statutes, Good Samaritan laws, invasion of privacy, refusal of service & informed consent, DNR/end of life issues, abandonment, the importance of proper documentation, and how to protect yourself if you do find yourself being sued.

Attendees will understand:

- Relevant laws that apply to EMS operations in Alaska.

- Things that can lead to legal liability.

- Steps they can take to protect themselves from liability.
