Great Beginnings 2024
Great Beginnings 2024
Thu, September 26, 2024 — Sat, September 28, 2024
THIS EVENT IS 100% FREE!

Welcome to the annual WV Great Beginnings Infant/Toddler Conference September 26th, 27th, and 28th, 2024 at the Marriott Waterfront Hotel in Morgantown. All sessions and presenters will be in person. Anyone working with the infant/toddler age group is welcome to attend including Child Care providers, Early Head Start, WV Birth to Three, WV Infant/Toddler Mental Health Association members, and WV Home Visitation Program.

Licensed child care programs, regulated facilities, and family child care providers may be eligible to receive resources from the Model Rooms when attendance requirements are met. There is only one wish list per childcare program. Identifying a specific item on a wish list does NOT guarantee you will receive it. Please make sure you can fit all requested wish list items in your vehicle. ALL items must be distributed on Saturday. No holds. This year, resources will be distributed a little differently. Each center registered will be given a chance at a select number of big-ticket items. These will be drawn on Friday morning to announce who has received these items. If you receive a big-ticket item, you will be removed from the wish list distribution. Those who do not receive a big-ticket item will still receive resources from their wish list.

A variety of sessions are offered for the newest of providers to the more seasoned providers. Many sessions may be of particular interest to directors and administrators. Look for the symbols that indicate sessions that meet requirements for credentials and specializations, Breastfeeding Friendly Designation renewal and Tiered Reimbursement.

All participants will benefit from the conference and you are invited to take advantage of this opportunity to recharge your passion for infants and toddlers.

** Please practice professionalism while attending sessions by arriving on time, remaining in the sessions for the full duration, limiting distractions, avoiding sidebar conversations, and silencing any devices. Everyone is there to sharpen their skills and understanding of this age which can only be done when we are respectful to others and the speakers.**

FULL CONFERENCE ATTENDENCE BY A CENTER REPRESENTATIVE IS REQUIRED TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR RESOURCES.

In order to for a center to receive resources at the conclusion of Great Beginnings 2024, a representative from that Center MUST be present each day of the conference, no exceptions. Individuals must have their certificates stamped each session to be eligible for credit and model room items. To receive resources for conference attendance your center must have one representative present every day of the conference. For example: Director on Thursday, staff on Friday, staff on Saturday. If there is a representative present all three days, you will receive resources. Not all staff are required to be present every day.

WV STARS credit will be available to those that attend full days of sessions. No partial day credit will be available. No exceptions. Individuals MUST sign in AND out EACH DAY with their R&R. No credit will be awarded after October 25, 2024.

When checking-in to any Marriott property, you will be asked to provide a card at check-in for "incidentals", in addition to the charge for your stay. This incidentals charge is $50 per night. This is put as a hold on your card to cover any room charges you may make during your stay. If you do not charge anything to your room, this hold will fall off within 3-10 business days (depending on your bank). When checking-in if you are able, we do recommend you use a credit card as the holds typically fall off earlier on a credit card versus a debit card.

Please make SURE to create and keep your log in and password information. This will be essential for your access to your conference itinerary.

In this session, we will take a closer look at supporting the emotional needs of infants and toddlers. Caregivers and children must have an emotional bond before learning can happen. We will look closely at these relationships and the independence and leadership children have within the environment. We will learn strategies to build these bonds by ensuring that children’s needs are met, including respect, responsiveness, and their comfort through verbal and nonverbal cues and interactions. Outcomes: As a result of this workshop, participants will be able to: • follow children’s lead, give independence to have free movement throughout the learning environment, and be aware and responsive to verbal and non-verbal cues from children. • utilize practical strategies to develop a warm, nurturing learning environment.

A treasure basket is a low, sturdy basket filled with items from nature or around the house. Babies find these interesting because of the variety in appearance: textures, smells, surface temperatures, weight, and the sounds they can make. Islands of discovery are the next logical step. As babies become mobile, they are constantly on the move. Islands of discovery can be blankets, mats, baskets, or buckets of materials placed around the room or playground to allow young children to explore objects while honoring their need to be in motion.

“Get children outside more!” It sounds easy, but high-quality nature-based early childhood education (NbECE) doesn’t happen overnight. Rather, using the outdoors as an extension of the classroom requires a shift in both administrative and teaching practices. The role of leadership is to help teachers overcome the real and perceived challenges of nature-based learning. Using a continuum of NbECE as the overarching framework, Rachel will address the unique challenges of integrating nature into the preschool classroom. No matter your starting point, you’ll leave with solutions related to regulations, logistics, and supporting teachers and families in shifting toward a nature-based approach. You’ll also leave smiling, energized, and ready to change.
